Internal response, external event

From “The Daily Stoic“. 25 February, “The smoke and dust of myth”.

Keep a list before your mind of those who burned with anger and resentment about something, of even the most renowned for success, misfortune, evil deeds, or any special distinction. Then ask yourself, how did that work out? Smoke and dust, the stuff of simple myth trying to be legend… (Marcus Aurelius)

The road rage videos on YouTube. Every one, the aggressor ends up the buffoon and the victim, the victor. Even if the victim was in the wrong. His anger (always seems to be some ‘roided up male) makes him the bad guy.

Anger and resentment are internal responses to external events. The only weight they have is the weight I give them. Leave them by the side of the road. Be indifferent, clear my head, move on.
